J'adore: Nailhead Ottoman

This past weekend, when I visited my parents, I brought my Domino: The Book of Decorating because my mom wanted to borrow it. She said that the danger in browsing interior design books and shelter magazines is that one can easily create a long wish list of things to change in his or her space. Sound familiar?

Recently I just added the nail head ottoman, like this
Visconti storage ottoman , to my ever- growing wish list after seeing it in a magazine.
Isn't it gorgeous? I love the trim and the shape, which is a welcome departure from the usual linear angles of many storage ottomans available in the market. It can be an extra seating or a casual side table for a living room, while simultaneously acting as a hiding spot for toys, remote controls, or blankets. I was surprised to learn that it's lacquer and not leather, though I would expect the latter for $875. But you know that a high price tag usually doesn't deter me--- time for a DIY project!

Here's an ottoman from
Target:

I think it's begging to be embellished with nail heads, don't you agree? I found some instructions on adding nail head trim on Chopsticks & Pearls (cute blog name!), Matters of Style, and Freckles Chick.

It seems like from reading the various DIY testimonials that it's better to use a nail head trim kit, rather than hammering individual nail heads. Stay tuned! :)

Small Biz: Plumo

I don't know where I've been, but I just recently stumbled upon the online shop of London- based Plumo. It reminds me so much of Anthropologie, with its vintage chic aesthetic.

I am seeing a plethora of ideas for holiday gift- giving and decorating:

How great are these Fabergé eggs?

I think it would be easy to make a craft kit like this haberdashery box

Unique copper scissors from Yemen artisans

Now all I need is a more favorable U.S. dollar- British pound exchange rate!

Make Your Own: Ribbon Necklaces

In the November issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine, one of the key accessories featured for the season was a ribbon necklace.

1.
Marni chain flower necklace
2.
Ann Taylor necklace
3. Erickson Beamon for Target Resin, Metal Suede Cord, Chain necklace
4.
Juicy Couture Art Deco woven necklace

You can purchase one, no matter your budget. But what about making your own?

My version (left) was inspired by a Blueprint magazine article on the right. Simply tie a ribbon around the ends of an un-hooked charm bracelet, and voila! Instant ribbon necklace.

I also found this tutorial for a ribbon necklace from blogger Happy Together. Her inspiration:

Small Biz: Kireina Paper

Bonjour, mes ami(e)s! I hope you had marvelous weekend. I've been following Nicole Ossola's blog, kirei nest, for a few weeks now. It's a new favorite! Nicole not only works for the local county government of San Diego, but she also designs and runs a line of wedding stationery and paper goods called Kireina Paper. Oh by the way, she's also working on her master's degree. Whew! Suddenly I feel like I'm lazy, but also simultaneously motivated to pursue my creative goals pronto.

How adorable are these invitations, boutonnieres, and tags? Now go check out Nicole's shop and blog!

J'adore: Le Poeme Rug

Ballard Designs consistently releases drool- worthy items. This Le Poeme rug is no different:

I want it for my entryway; love that it can take a beating for the outdoors but still beautiful enough to go inside a home. The price is a bit steep, but I haven't been thrilled with some of the rugs at the usual discount stores. Plus, I've had major regrets not ordering things sooner from Ballard; most of the merchandise on my wish list sell out quickly! Lesson learned... I'm ordering the rug this week!

By the way, the words are from Jean de La Fontaine's La Cigale et La Fourmi (The Cricket and The Ant):

The cricket, having sung all summer long,
found her foods too few when the north wind blew

Nowhere could she spy a single morsel - worm or fly.

She thought her neighbor, the ant, might help,

and begged her for a bit of grain till summer came back again.

"By next harvest, I'll repay interest and principal both,"

she swore on the animal's oath.

Now, the ant may admit to a fault or two,

But lending is not something she will ever do.

So she asked, "What did you do when the weather was warm?"

"By night and day, to all who came, I sang at every chance."

"You sang, did you? How very nice. Now go and dance."

Utterly Gorgeous...

I have known about the bridal e-zine Utterly Engaged for some time, but I finally had a chance to view an issue in its entirety on my day off from work on Saturday. A-mazing! Of course it's no surprise that I'm drawn to the current issue's vintage theme. Check out how they interpreted the party soiree scenes from Breakfast at Tiffany's for today's wedding.

From this...

To this....

Check out the details, people! The best part is that you can have all this gorgeousness with a small budget and a little bit of elbow grease.

Friday Favorites

I will only have Saturday off from work, but I'm going to make the most of it by adding some autumn touches to my home. I saw many amazing images all over the web this week, and I may just implement some of these ideas to my decor.

My decorating style is far from traditional, but I have come to appreciate the aesthetic since living in Nashville, Tennessee. A few bloggers reported that Southern Living revamped its magazine into a fresh, modern publication without alienating its traditionally- minded readers. I must say that I am impressed! I have yet to find a suitable replacement for the defunct magazine Cottage Living, but I think the new Southern Living may just fit the bill.

Many thanks to
belle maison and decorology for sharing these inspiring photos.

Also, in keeping with the blog name "the small home," I included images from Marie Claire Maison's (another fantastic publication, by the way) website. Michelle of Design Evolution directed her readers to their gallery featuring "petits espaces."

Purple Reign

I don't know about you, but I go through phases of color obsession. I love most colors to begin with, but occasionally I'm drawn to a color or a group of colors. Right now said color just happens to be purples. Right now I love them paired with blacks, grays, pale pinks and/or whites. You may even notice that I'm wearing purple eye shadow more often these days!

Wild Things

I can't believe that it has been over twenty years since I read Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are." Who knew monsters could be so lovable? Or tasty? ;)

Starting the Week on a Good Note

I hope that all my dear readers had a marvelous weekend! San Diego was blessed (at least I thought so) with wool coat weather yesterday--- yeah! I saw many local denizens shivering in their shorts-and T-shirt ensembles. Meanwhile, I stayed toasty in my yellow pea coat, cord skirt, and boots! :)

I learned via Oh So Beautiful Paper that Delphine, known for its gorgeous letterpress goods, now offers digital printing on all their letterpress designs. I think that sometimes digitally printed wedding invitations can be a catch-22; the quality and fine details are sacrificed due to tight budgets. With Delphine
, affianced couples can now save money without sacrificing paper style.

Aside from the gorgeous designs, don't you just love how the invitations suites were styled for the photos? Those extra details make them more special and inspiring!
